16 years old are you kidding me? I have a hard time believing that the legal smoking age is 18 let alone contemplating lowering it to a staggering 16. A 16 year old lacks the ability to think about important decisions regarding their future as they are still in that stage where puberty is occurring and are fully unaware of the risks that smoking will have on their health both mentally and physically. This is undeniable and I can't understand why some people would want to allow something like this to happen.They face many choices and hard decisions and by dropping the age we are practically putting the cigarettes in their mouths and lighting it up for them. The lack of people willing to teach teens about correct decision making when it comes to this kind of thing makes me sad. People as young as 2 give or take a few years have been documented smoking as much as a whopping 40 cigarettes a day! We must remember that these are our children and we need to protect them as best we can and if that means taking measures into our own hands and becoming stricter with what we teach our children then so be it.
If children as young as two are smoking then what's so bad about lowering the age to sixteen? I've seen teens as young as thirteen smoking only to die in fatal traffic accidents. You never know when you're going to die so why not live it like you want to?
ReplyDeleteIf you're going to argue that they shouldn't be allowed the decision because they are too young then you should take a closer look at the parenting given to these kids and ask why are there no adults around supervising them? The warning on cigarette packets are CLEARLY labeled so if a sixteen year old can read it clearly and understand the word "Danger" then they are more capable then a large majority of adults E.g those radical Islamic insurgents that accidentally blow themselves up.
Hi I agree with your argument,but who are these people suggesting that the legal smoking age be lowered to 16? I've never even heard of that. If anything, people are trying to get fewer and fewer people smoking (eg, all the government-endorsed anti-smoking campaigns). You make a clear argument which is very easy to agree with, but I'm not sure who you are arguing against? Perhaps you could argue that there should be harsher punishments for those who supply minors with ciggarettes?
